Rationale behind the formulations. (Written by our Herbologist) Utilizing Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Western styles of Herbalism requires balance on many levels. A synergistic effect inevitably takes place when combining a group of herbs together to produce the desired effect or set of effects. For one thing, most of these herbs have never been combined before and when combining herbs in a formula one must consider the effect of the individual herbs and then the formula as a whole.
	This brings us to the importance of the philosophical idea of energetics within herbalism. Before science, herbs were basically classified energetically. The energetics of the herb defined and determined the effect that was produced. For example, herbs can be hot, cold, drying or moistening, ascending or descending etc.
A traditional herbalist would have known the subtle difference between prescribing this carminative or that, which one is hotter and which one would be inappropriate, etc. Another subtle difference is the form in which an herb Is administered. There is a great difference in the energetics of say dried ginger, fresh ginger, pan fried ginger, ginger peel etc.
	When formulating, one must always strive to balance and harmonize the energetics of the individual herbs in order to produce an effective formula. This is particularly important when formulating for a broad group of individuals as is the case here If one chooses herbs based solely on western biomedical models, an important piece will be missing, (the qualitative, tertiary effects). Therefore, the formulations have been considered for their effectiveness energetically, their known physiological function, their safety profile, and their traditional usages.
